Gluten-Free Tailgating (Plus a Giveaway!)

Congratulations Ashley Pelley and Schmidty! You are the winners of our Thai Kitchen gluten-free giveaway. Please email cmcevoy@celiaccentral.org with your mailing address to claim your prize.

When I think of tailgating food, most of it is, well, gluteny. For a morning game, it’s donuts and bagels. In the afternoon, the list consists of burger & buns, hoagies, and soft pretzels. Then there’s the beer, the cups that always seem to get mixed up, and the one friend who insists on touching everything while taking bites of his sandwich. It certainly doesn’t make it easy if you need to be gluten-free.

When Thai Kitchen contacted us about doing a fall campaign, it was the perfect opportunity to create a Gluten-Free Tailgating Guide to help everyone make going to a game less stress and more fun.

Tailgating on a very cold day.

I’ll be honest, Whitney and I racked our brains for a few days while creating this guide. Sure, there were the usual food safety tips, like keeping meats and dairy in a cooler. But avoiding cross-contamination? That required some crafty thinking.

The guide is now posted in the Thai Kitchen Gluten-Free Recipe Box on our website. It even has a recipe for Curry Turkey Burgers with Pineapple Salsa, because if you volunteer to make the burgers (Warning: some people put breadcrumbs in their burger mix), you might as well impress the crowd.

See if there is a local gluten free group in the area. There will often be a group who may be able to assist with suggestions from the area where gluten free supplies may be found. Or may be willing to include more people into their tailgate. You never know if there is a gluten free brewer in that group who wants to give away their beer too. I keep trying to give mine away so I can make more and refine my process. (We can’t sell, and various state rules may technically apply.)

Grilling slices of polenta and serving with grilled sausage and vegetables makes a great meal — no one misses the glutens at all!

How ’bout a shrimp boil with potatoes, corn on the cob and GF sausage in Old Bay seasoning. And you’ll need some GF beer to go with it, of course.

It’s important to bring some delicious gluten-free beverages, my faves are redbridge beer and magner’s hard cider!

Bring your own beer or make margarita’s! There is a fantastic pomegranate infused tequila called La Pinta. It’s great alone, mixed with juice or I am sure-in a margarita! Even though it would be on the menu with the Thai Kitchen items (which I love so much I carry them in my store, The Bite Market), I think they would taste great together.

The reaction occurs when the residue on your hands
makes its way to your lips or into your mouth. When the water is affected this can also affect the livestock such as cows or
pigs that are often on nearby farms. Early diagnosis is essential as the danger of gluten intolerance cannot be over-stressed.
